“Magnolias carry substantial blooms and stand through every changing season.”The meaning behind Hope in Bloom

The story

Strength and perseverance, in clay

The magnolia is a picture of resilience. Its blooms are big and sturdy, and the tree holds its leaves through every season. That is what cancer asks of patients, and of the families, caregivers and medical teams who walk beside them.

April Dupuis is creating a magnolia-inspired collection just for this event, carved by hand in her Oxford, Mississippi studio. It will be shown alongside her complete line of work, more than 500 pieces in all, plus a silent auction of a few one-of-a-kind pieces.

Every piece you take home helps West Cancer Foundation keep its services free for the people who need them.

The artist

About April Dupuis

April Dupuis is a master potter and the founder of The Potter’s Hands Studio, with a studio and gallery in Oxford and a studio in Hernando, Mississippi. Her hand-carved sgraffito stoneware is covered in Southern florals and faith-inspired imagery, and no two pieces are alike.

Her work includes 450 pieces for Memphis’s Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen, made for a James Beard Foundation dinner, and live pottery demonstrations during worship services at churches across the Mid-South. She has taught adult pottery for 17 years and exhibited with the Memphis Potters Guild for 15.

For Hope in Bloom, she is turning the magnolia into a collection of its own, made to honor the strength of everyone touched by cancer.
